Field Experience
I have been lucky enough to gain a fair amount of experience in the field. During my time at university, I have learnt a few valuable field techniques. In the first year, we went mist netting for garden birds in the university grounds, allowing me to learn how to handle small birds, such as dunnocks and great tits. In the second year, we set up Longworth small mammal traps, to perform a small survey. We caught a few species, including wood mice, bank voles and even a water shrew! This experience allowed me to see how to safely handle small mammals, and how to keep the animal as calm as possible. I have also had the opportunity to perform a dissection of a grey squirrel, and observe the dissection of a harbour porpoise and a grey seal (don't worry, I won't upload pictures of the dissections on here!). It was great experience to be able to perform a dissection, allowing me to see all of the adaptations that have allowed this species to thrive. It was also very interesting to see the dissections of two marine mammals, and how these creatures are able to survive in their harsh environment.
I have also been on two major field trips with the university. Read about the Scotland trip here, and the South Africa trip here.
Relevant Work Experience & Current CV
Right, I'll be honest with you. I haven't got much work experience. But that is soon to change, as I have recently been offered an internship at Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park! I will be working with small primates, such as tamarins and marmosets, as well as other species on site. This placement starts in August 2014 and will last for a year, and I will be sure to update the website with my progress!
I have gained a very small amount of experience. I had one week's work experience at St. Peter's Garden Centre in Worcester at high school, and during that week, I did get the chance to work in the pet department. This did give me the chance to gain some hands-on work with animals, including helping to give some medicine to a poorly mouse, cleaning fish tanks and setting up tanks for some new arrivals, including sand lizards and pygmy chameleons.
