Research Project - Jackdaw Vocalizations
During my final year of university, I undertook a research project on jackdaws and their vocalizations when parent birds are rearing their young.
Sounds scary, huh?
Well, it wasn't that scary. I analysed audio and video files of jackdaw nestboxes to try and answer four main questions.
I have performed all of the data analysis and have found some pretty interesting results! I'm not going to put them here though...someone might steal them! The write-up has been completed and so this project has now finished. It was a lot of fun to do and allowed me to find out some really interesting things about the jackdaw. A very worthwhile experience!
My project supervisor was Dr. Alex Thornton, who has been running the main jackdaw project for some time now. Visit the website for the project to gain some more information.

- Is jackdaw chick begging an honest signal of need?
- What is the use of the parents' 'chuck' call?
- Do parent birds actively alter their calling patterns between when they have eggs and after these eggs have hatched?
- Do differing broods of jackdaw chicks show differing tendencies for the length of time that they beg?
