Work Experience
I am currently working as an Animal Keeper Assistant on the predator section at Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park. I previously worked on the small primate and small mammal section at the park, as an intern. A list of species that I have worked with can be found below.
I have learnt a lot in my short time as a keeper at the Park. I have gained a large amount of experience in animal husbandry, from the daily routine of cleaning and feeding animals, to more in depth skills such as diet preparation, medication and enrichment (such as the forage boxes for callitrichids on the right). I have learnt how important it is to communicate with other keepers, through both oral communication and notes. I have also learnt the importance of observation skills when looking after animals, and being able to ascertain when an individual has a problem, through a change in behaviour or decline in body condition. I have had the chance to perform some clicker training, both on a Red Panda and a Guinea Pig.
I have also been able to read a lot of material as part of the internship, including research books and documents such as Regional Collection Plans and Husbandry Guidelines for Callitrichids. This has enhanced my knowledge of the species in my care and how a zoological collection works behind the scenes. Whilst at the Park, I have also taken photographs that have been used in promotional materials, as well as leafleting to boost knowledge of the Park.
Below is a list of species that I work with every day on my section, as well as other species that I have had the chance to gain some experience (however small) with.
